Yaws Disease
Yaws is a chronic bacterial infection that mainly affects the skin, bones, and joints. It is caused by the bacterium Yaws, specifically Treponema pallidum subspecies pertenue. It is closely related to the bacterium that causes syphilis, but yaws is not a sexually transmitted infection.
How It Spreads
Yaws spreads through:
Direct skin-to-skin contact with the fluid from an infected person's skin lesion.
Small cuts or abrasions in the skin facilitate transmission.
